The Opening (Fleet racing - March)

Last night (sunday night) saw the opening of the racing. There were fire works during the day (which we saw from the promenade)... but we unfortunately missed the light and fire works show in the evening. We have all been a little sick with change in temperatures etc... but Zoe's took on mild asthma last night so we didn't want to risk a venture out in the very cold evening (and a night in Spanish hospital). Don't panic - she is fine, her mother being over protective (!).

We bought bikes to get around - rather than relying completely on spanish public transport. I suspect Hunter will be off his trainer wheels in a few weeks and Zoe will be rivaling Sarah Ulmer.

Fleet racing starts tomorrow (tuesday). Rod has worked every day since we have been here. A late one tonight - we are looking forward to his first day off next weekend!!!

We caught a bus into the old city a few days ago and went to the fish markets. It was a wonderful experience. We saw loads of fresh fish, a man cutting up live eels, pigs heads and skinned sheeps heads (eyeball intact) for sale! We had lunch in the square and were told off (by the policio!) for playing on the grass by the fountain. There is not alot of grass anywhere- so what they have is precious. How lucky we are in New Zealand!

We have awoken to a cold overcast day... so a little recovery and quiet day today.

Hope all is well with you all.

Words for the week:

Azure - Blue
Queso - Cheese

Loads of love,

Pleased to see that the Sharp household is functioning exactly as it would here - Janine shopping, Hunter beating up strangers, Zoe being wondergirl and Rod ? .... working!

I am pleased to know that there will be a bit of "global culture" hanging off your balcony over the coming months.

Plenty of sore chicks dropping off their Tamariki at Appleby School this morning - apparently the heat and wind during the run are to blame - nothing to do with the alcoholic debrief let it be said!

Solo hable un puco de Espanol pero ... don't combine the words Ruzzo and Queso!

Hi guys -thanks for your comments. We check the blog daily in anticipation.

How did you go on the run Lou?? Were you happy with your time? What about the others? I am a bit sad I wasn't there - definitely next year. I'm sure you made the most of sat night celebrations!!

Mum - can you give us your new EMail address so we can respond directly. Yes - we did get Bretts message - thanks heaps!

We've had a great day. Did some school work this morning and headed for the beach and promonade this afternoon. Spent 4 1/2 hours biking and stopping off at playgrounds. Managed a cafe' leche on the way back and sussed out the local metro (train) station. Is a bit of a haul to get there- but once there it's great access. Am thinking of investing in scooters to get to the station (20 min ride) and then we can carry them on the train.

Hope you are all weel.

Hello from Appleby
Harri very impressed with the new bikes. She wondered whether you are going to leave them in Spain, when you come home.
H thought the spider rope looked pretty cool. Shame we didn't get a picture of you on it, Janine? What a huge complex you're living in. Plenty of neighbours to get sugar and flour from!!?
Lots of love

Harriet,
We are not sure if we are bringing the bikes home or not. They were very cheap - and last years bikes apparently rusted pretty badly (we are right by the beach). We'll see what state they are in in July!!

Sarah - I DID get to the top of the rope web(!I promise). Vertigo prevailed though. We are biking to a big playground today - down in the river Turia. A huge Gulliver. Will take pickies for you... (I must remember to "do" my hair!!

Busby's - Global culture hanging out for all to see at present. We finally are getting nicer weather... had a coffee (cafe' leche) at a restaurant whilst watching the kids play on the beach. Yip - startng to feel like the Spanish holiday I had imagined. .... although Rod working hard... not back until 2am last night. The first of the fleet racing starts today.

Adios for now my amigos...

Hi Sharp family,
Sounds like you have all settled in well. Apartment living must be a big change from rural Nelson. Are you missing your cows?
Sam and Alex found the toilet story very amusing. They would also like to let Uncle Rodders know that they have purchased a motorbike. Much fun in the Groot house! I am already having to close my eyes, they go so fast!!
You guys are going to come back so fit what with all the bike riding and stair climbing. Miss u all.
Love Koen, Sonya, Sam and Alex

Hey Guys - hope all is going well over there - I've enjoyed looking at your site and reading about what you're up too. I had to laugh about your smalls needing to be dried indoors as opposed to being dried on the outdoor railings of your apartment balcony. Rod used to dry his G-Strings on the barrel of our Scorpion Tank (no worries whatsoever) - very embarrasing for a young innocent like myself - but he was an officer and I was just a plebb! so I could'nt say much in fear of retribution! Keep safe - Grape ride in Blenhiem was fantastic. Sturmy :)

Hi there

I eventually found my way to your blog and got Rod's podcast finished. It was a bit of a marathon as it turned out but the kids had fun playing with it!

Looking forward to your blogs now that things are heating up on the water!

Zoe - after you had been to the fish market and seen the pigs head for sale, what did you end up having for lunch??? Was it a pork sandwich? Or did you get some fish pie?
School finishes today for the Easter Holidays.
Your blog looks great.

Hi guys, I have finally recovered from my 2.5 hour slog through the Hanmer forest. Not a great run for anyone, 29 degrees and the organisers ran out of water at the 16 km mark. Great fun hydrosliding with Kylie after a few glasses of bubbles tho! Sounds like you are all having a great time (perhaps not Rod), love reading the blog. Easter weather here has been fabulous and we have had good mix of fun, family and jobs. Wish you were around to add to it. Keep the news coming. Lou

Hi Guys, it sounds & looks like you are having a great time. Laura and Alicia think its just great that Zoe and Hunter got to buy their new bikes from the SUPERMARKET....actually the exact words from Laura's mouth were "that's wierd". Alicia wants to send you a DVD she selected from the library last weekend called "Dora the Explorer" because they speak Spanish in it all the time.
Janine, next time we visit Nelson we'll look forward to you showing us some new culinary skills after your fish market experience. Most importantly, the Highlanders lost to the Chiefs (marginally) so prospects of Super 14 success is out of the question.

Love to you all
Bernie, Simon, Laura and Alicia xxxx

This is the best way to visit daddy - 45 min bike ride down the promonade. You have to look out for trees and spanish ladies (Hunter found out!!)

Gullivers Travels

Gullivers Travels
In the old river Turia (river redirected long ago after continuous flooding) there are lots of playgrounds and bike tracks. The kids are playing on a huge giant Gulliver. There are lots of slides and stairs and ropes to climb. If you look hard you can see Gullivers head behind - the kids are standing on his arm.

A huge rope spider web on the beach is very cool to climb up (Mum only spent a very SHORT time at the top!!!)
